This is a post regarding a three days colourful Indian wedding that took place at Athens Riviera.
Not many people but not few as well for a destination wedding!
Simi and Nisheeth come from India but live at USA. When they decided to get married they were considering many European destinations but after careful consideration and thought, Athens was their choice!
Elegant wedding, beautiful people, admirable culture and colourful vibes literally but also metaphorically!

On the first day a welcome dinner was held at Plaza Resort Hotel. Chill out atmosphere and a “know us better” feeling.
On the second day, drinks and party vibes at “Ktima 48”! Sangeet event, friends and families performing for the bride and groom, celebrating, dancing, singing, having fun!! Party vibes and enjoyment!!
“Ktima Hatzi” was getting ready on the third day to host the BIG day, the wedding day!!
In the morning, at “Plaza Resort Hotel”, the bride and her family fulfilled the Chura and Haid custom, this wonderful custom when family and guests surround the bride using fire, scents, water, milk, colours, symbols and of course flowers while the priest is chanting! So nice!
Simi started her preparation after the Chura and Haid ceremony, at “Ktima Hatzi” while Nisheeth got ready at the “Plaza Hotel Resort”.
Nisheeth arrived, riding a horse and the celebrations started!
A small ceremony where the bride and the groom exchanged garlands happened before the religious ceremony under a pink coloured gazebo!
Fire, water, colours, flowers, rise and herbs where just a few elements used at this meaningful and spiritual wedding!
What can I say…..really impressive wedding, exceptional culture and equally exceptional was the new married couple and also their families and friends!!

Athens Riviera is the coastal area in the southern suburbs of Athens, Greece from Piraeus to Sounio . It is located about 16 km (9.9 mi) from downtown Athens stretching from the southern suburbs of Athens to the southernmost point of Attica, Cape Sounio. According to the Greek National Tourism Organisation the main areas of the Athens Riviera are: the Floisvos Marina, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni, Lagonisi, Varkiza, Anavyssos and Sounio.
Palaio Faliro, a coastal district, a 10-minute drive away from the centre of Athens, is among locals’ favourite places for relaxation. It is always busy here, with Athenians and tourists strolling along the coast and bathing on the local beaches (one of the most popular is the sandy Eden). One of Athens’ largest harbours, Flisvos Marina, is located here.
Glyfada, the largest of Athens’ southern suburbs, is traditionally considered the capital’s nightlife and entertainment hub. Glyfada is believed to be a prestigious neighbourhood, and many Greek celebrities — singers, actors and athletes — buy apartments here. One of the most popular places in Glyfada is the local golf club, Glyfada Golf Course.
Voula is located 3 km to the south of Glyfada. The suburb is known for its beaches: Voula A boasts a Blue Flag, which is only awarded to environmentally friendly beaches that comply with stringent safety and water quality standards, and Voula B is accessible for people with disabilities.
Vouliagmeni, a suburb full of greenery with luxurious villas and the city’s best hotels, is located 30 minutes from the centre of Athens by car. One of the jewels of the suburb is the eponymous rockbound lake which is good for bathing throughout the year.
Varkiza is the perfect beach holiday destination. The local beaches have been awarded Blue Flags for their quality, and the watersports aficionados will find everything they need here (windsurfers will be particularly pleased).

Weddings in India vary regionally, the religion and per personal preferences of the bride and groom. They are festive occasions in India, and in most cases celebrated with extensive decorations, colors, music, dance, costumes and rituals that depend on the religion of the bride and the groom, as well as their preferences. India celebrates about 10 million weddings per year, of which about 80% are Hindu weddings.
While there are many festival-related rituals in Hindu weddings వివాహం(wedding) is the most extensive persogs (wednal ritual an adult Hindu undertakes in his or her life.Typical Hindu families spend significant effort and financial resources to prepare and celebrate weddings. The rituals and process of a Hindu wedding vary depending on region of India, local adaptations, resources of the family and preferences of the bride and the groom. Nevertheless, there are a few key rituals common in Hindu weddings – Kanyadaan, Panigrahana, and Saptapadi; these are respectively, gifting away of daughter by the father, voluntarily holding hand near the fire to signify impending union, and taking seven steps before fire with each step including a set of mutual vows. After the seventh step and vows of Saptapadi, the couple is legally husband and wife.Jain and Buddhist weddings in India, share many themes, but are centered around their respective religious ideas and texts.
Sikhs get married through a ceremony called Anand Karaj, a ritual started by the third leader of Sikhism, Guru Amar Das. The couple walk around the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib four times. Indian Muslims celebrate a traditional Islamic wedding following customs similar to those practiced in the Middle East. The rituals include Nikah, payment of financial dower called Mahr by the groom to the bride, signing of marriage contract, and a reception.Indian Christian weddings follow customs similar to those practiced in the Christian countries in the West in states like Goa but have more Indian customs in other states.
In the past, the age of marriage was young. The average age of marriage for women in India has increased to 21 years, according to 2011 Census of India. In 2009, about 7% of women got married before the age of 18 Arranged marriages have long been the norm in Indian society. Even today, the majority of Indians have their marriages planned by their parents and other respected family-members. Recent studies suggest that Indian culture is trending away from traditional arranged marriages. Fewer marriages are purely arranged without consent and that the majority of surveyed Indian marriages are arranged with consent. The percentage of self-arranged marriages (called love marriages in India) have also increased, particularly in the urban parts of India. – Athens wedding photographer –
